Meet Sara! She's the Store Lead at our Campbell location, and just exudes positivity. We love having her on our team.

What are a few interesting things about you?

I studied herbal medicine for 10 years, and originally moved to Tucson to study desert plant medicine. In my 20's I moved states 7 times. I have over 20 tattoos, all black and gray.

What brought you to Cartel?

Once upon a time I worked at a specialty coffee shop in NYC. When I planned to move to Tucson, the owner of the shop in NYC put out feelers for the best cafe for me to work at in Tucson. Cartel was at the top of everyone's list. I've worked at Cartel from the moment I moved here 4 years ago. The rest is history.

What's your perspective on Cartel, your community, and the industry as a whole?

Cartel is extremely near and dear to my heart. As the first place I worked when I moved to Tucson 4 years ago, it has been way more than just a work place for me. My entire community and the life I've built here are all directly related to this space. Even though the coffee community in Tucson is pretty small, I also think it's quite impressive, with a number of amazing roasters. I've worked in specialty coffee for almost a decade, and I love this industry. Certainly working in service during a pandemic has had its struggles and challenges, but I continue to be so grateful for this space.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

My favorite thing about my job is the community surrounding it. I have an amazing staff and I am endlessly grateful for these hard working and incredible folks. I also feel very lucky that we've been able to maintain our strong foundation of "regulars" throughout the pandemic. Seeing these same customers everyday has really helped me maintain some semblance of normalcy. Plus, I've met some of my closest friends in this place!

What are your aspirations for the future?

Well, as I write this, I am 35 weeks pregnant with my first little one! There are a LOT of unknowns to come in my future, but I'm excited for it all. Someday, I hope to take all the coffee skills I've learned and open my own shop. And for now, my aspirations are simple: to spend more time hiking, in my garden, and learning how to be a good mama.

What is your favorite beverage?

I am obsessed with our seasonal honey lavender matcha (with oat milk!)

Say hello to Sara on your next visit to our store!
