Interestingly enough, the beloved Irish coffee actually has a surprisingly modern history.
Did you know that the beloved Irish coffee has a surprisingly modern history? A bartender at the Foynes Airbase in Ireland actually invented it back in the 1940s. The bartender, Joe Sheridan, created the drink to warm up cold and weary travelers who were arriving from transatlantic flights.
Legend has it that Joe whipped up the first Irish coffee in response to a group of passengers who were shivering from the cold. He added a shot of whiskey to their coffee, along with a dollop of cream, and voila! The Irish coffee was born.
People all around the world adore the rich and flavorful Irish coffee, making it a cherished drink to this day. So, the next time you sip on a warm, creamy Irish coffee, remember its humble origins and the inventive bartender who first whipped it up to warm the hearts (and hands) of weary travelers.
As the drink gained popularity at the Foynes Airbase, it found its way to San Francisco, where Stanton Delaplane introduced it to the United States. Delaplane, a travel writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, fell in love with Irish coffee during a visit to Ireland and convinced the owners of the Buena Vista Cafe to start serving it.
